"CIRCUS MUSIC FOR CIRCUS FOLK TO CLOWN AROUND WITH"

bladder bladder bladder / dimestore haloes split 7 inch
reviewed by chris beyond
i'm already a fan of bladder bladder bladder, so i know i'm in for a good time. this transplanted british punk band has a nice song in u.s. dole queue. I'm not sure I have any idea what they're talking about, but I like it. white american national killer is a flashback to sham 69. Pretty short. Wish it were longer, but you take what you can get. This is a good addition to their demo from over a year back. Ok, next side...the dimestore haloes. First thing we hear is "oi! oi! oi!" in the song sickness. nice tune. i can imagine it in some eighties movie. the next song tombstone raider...is that a drum machine? nice fast song. you can hug your girlfriend to this. this is worth yer bux.

blur "blur" CD
reviewed by chris beyond
this is my favorite blur album yet. it proves once and for all who wins the blur/oasis battle (depending on who you are, but between you and me...it should be the band who has more respect for other people...but that's me). anyway, they tried to have a "more american" sound on this one, but only succeed partially with loud guitars and some looped beats. (those accents...a dead giveaway!) i love every song on this album. the opening track beetlebum is as if john lennon was fronting for them. you can tell that they've been listening to a lot of beck with tracks like i'm just a killer for your love and essex dogs. everyone has heard song 2 by now and it'll probably be played to death, but don't let that stop you from getting this album. if you have to, just shoot your radio. (don't tell mom!)

bob "overflowing with freakness demo" demo cassette
reviewed by chris beyond
really hard clown music from real clowns. this is bob's 3rd or 4th release and it still has a lot of the same songs as the other two, but at least they keep getting better with each recording and the new songs on this cassette are good too. non mi piace la tu facia is a modern classic. bill is a reworking of carnival of suffering's a day at the carnival. this is the best recording yet, except the vocals which are muddy and barely audible most of the time. you make the call. bob is maturing into a very likeable band, but the singer needs to go crazy! once he goes totally nuts with his vocals, they'll rule.

the chemical brothers"dIg your own hole" CD / Cassette
reviewed by chris beyond
you'd probably think that i hate this and i'd probably think so too, but looking past the kiis-fm / power 106 support...this is a pretty decent album. throw on a little noel gallager (oasis) on the song setting sun and you get a good noir 60s-esque go-go cage dance tune. the chemical brothers are the uk's answer to our dust brothers...laying down trip-hop beats that you can dance to or sit back and chill while driving on the 101 freeway. get this while it's still on sale. (compare it to a movie matinee.)

don salsa"koolaide moustache in jonestown" cd
reviewed by chris beyond
this is my favorite this month. a perfect orchestration of noise, music, keyboards, samples, and whatever is left. the first song the deck is almost 32 minutes long!!! (the song changes so much, you wouldn't know it was one song unless you looked at the time on your stereo.) kind of a cross between mr. bungle and john zorn (heavy on bungle ["disco volarte" era]...but is so good that it holds its own fine). you'll love every one of the 19 songs on here. (a couple of the tracks are just short samples) my favorites are the deck, rod stew art, untitled, %!#3, el stronzolo, rye chiphell, and every other song on here. the only real drawback to this cd is the unfortunate cover art which gives the wrong mailing address, the list of songs was handwritten (illegible at times) and pushed to the side (to make room for the wrong mailing address), the side of the cd makes it look like the title of the album is the name of the band, and the inner art is unreadable. i like this so much, spiffy records (see ad) will be distributing this in the southern california area. a laugh a second, this is possibly the cd of the year!

iggy pop"raw power" CD / Cassette
reviewed by quin
along with the ramones "too tough to die" and the residents "duck stab"...iggy and the stooges "raw power" is one of the most electro-dynamicly titled albums of all time. since "raw power" was first released in 1973 and still sounds just as good today (if not better) it would only be appropriate to call it new music and in a time when a lot of new music is crap, we desperately need to call this new, because it rules. all of the songs on this album are classics and really great especially your pretty face is going to hell which was originally titled hard to beat. also...after the overplay of lust for life...it's really great to hear an album of old iggy stuff without that song so...it's about time they reissued "raw power"...and who says new music has to suck!

the first song only one is pretty ok. the rest are pretty much like the first only a little different. i really like this band's logo. i had a cat, but now i don't have a cat anymore. maybe i'll have another cat someday. (you ever feel like not really reviewing something and just talk about nothing in general?) oh, and buy this tape if you want to.

plan 9 from outer space [soundtrack] cd
reviewed by quin
ed wood's plan 9 from outer space is both his best and worst film. it is a true gem to behold as is its soundtrack. the original motion picture soundtrack of plan 9 is so strange mainly because it consists of the entire film on cd. what the hell were they thinking? i donŐt know, but it was a great idea. this gives us a chance to see plan 9 the way a blind person would and without the distraction of tor's ugly face...the wackly inane and wonderfully retarded dialogue jumps right out at you with lines like future events such as these will effect you in the future and the gargantuan tor johnson replacing the word medical with "melical"...this is probably one of the best soundtracks ever. i mean it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

regurgitator"to-plang" cd/cassette
reviewed by chris beyond
ok, with their first song, i sucked a lot of cock to get where i am, you know you're in for something interesting. it's a good song...then the next song, kong foo sing, makes you regret that you liked the first song...but then the third song is really good. that's when i realized most of the songs are really different from each other, which made me appreciate it a lot more. lots of influences...rap, techno, nrrrd rock, and what-not. they are pretty talented, but at the same time it's nothing new. most of the songs are likable, but where is the soul? (did i just write that?) anyway this is the first i've heard of these guys and it's pretty decent. that's more than you can say about any album by whitesnake.

spanish kitchen "spanish kitchen" 7 inch vinyl
reviewed by chris beyond
the first song, unlucky men, is hypnotic with its jazzy bass lines. makes you want to snap your fingers. they sound like a band that would play the viper room (and they have). this band is probably going places with more songs like this. home cooking has a nice verse, but the chorus is not for me (but maybe it's for you...soft, melodic, and pleading). Nice verse though. If you like bands with lead singers that really sing (as opposed to screaming or yelling), then this is definitely the band for you. they're also really nice and spend lots of bucks on stamps (and opened for the knack) so get this album, ok?

the sudden "the sudden" cassette single
reviewed by chris beyond
i put this in totally expecting to hate it and turn it off. well the first song, the unsound room is still on, and i'm still listening. not that it's great...it's just ok. i'll probably never listen to it again...but if that were really peter murphy's voice, instead of a sound-alike...i probably would. the music is totally 90s goth with a singer who shifts from wall of voodoo to bauhaus. i think i sang like this when i was in a gothic band. i think many goth fans would like this. others may not. nuff said?

too much joy "green eggs and crack" cassette single
reviewed by chris beyond
they finally re-issued too much joy's first album and here it is (with three new songs thrown in for good measure). post new wave / pre-nerd rock is the only way i can describe the style...i guess it's true pure power-pop. it all sounds as if it were from some early john hughes movie;...like a song you'd hear in a car on the radio for a couple seconds till molly ringwald turns it off with her teeth. You can tell they were having lots of fun recording this. it's very listenable...just not all day. this is one that you'll keep coming back to. best songs are innocents ablaze, no beer, navigator, bored with love, years, and drum machine. the new songs are good too and would fit nicely in a 90s movie scene where john cusack drives through the city with a girl a his side. fans of too much joy would fight you for this one!
