BARRICHELLO "Down Soft E.P." CD single reviewed by chris beyond There's a new-new wave coming, I warn ya...and BARRICHELLO are part of it. There is so much good music coming from across the Atlantic, I can't even tell you,... but I'll try with this all new music review section. Every time I hear this particular e.p. there is something new I like about it. The CD itself seems to keep changing it's mind with each track of this 4 track CD. First you're in the computer sales department at some department store, and then you are in some mine digging for diamonds or that change you lost last week. Then you turn up on the side of a highway somewhere and you end up at a dance club shaking your booty like there's no tomorrow (but there is and you have to get up for work early). The whole thing is pretty short at only 11 minutes long, but they stretch it out by keeping it interesting. Oh, and I dig the (silkscreened?) cover art. This single for "Come Into Our Room" is from the track off their latest album "Walking With Thee". Maybe it's because of their name (CLINIC) and because of th fact that they wear surgical scrubs when they play, but I really feel like we're peeking in on somebody's operation wit this song. The drum and snare sound like a heart beating and some sort of life sustaining equipment. and the soft keys seem to emote that something very delicate is going on. It all changes with the lo-fi track 2 "Circle I" with its frantic guitar and steady repeating drumming. I love this band!!! The third track of this three track single is called "Christmas", but it doesn't feel very Christmassy to me and it almost seems like that is the point of the song. Anyway if you love CLINIC, you'll love this CD. If you haven't heard them yet, I'd get one of their full albums ("Clinic", "Internal Wrangler", "Walking With Thee") first and then you'll definitely want to get this too. Domino, P.O. I love it when music like this becomes available. In this case it just fell out of the sky for me in mp3 format, but you can purchase it on CD. The singer sounds a little like the singer of KaitO. And if that is not enough information to make you get this CD then...too bad. I do not want to ruin the experience of listening to this CD for the first time. Get it immediately. This CD review will be rather short and sweet though, since I said much of what I wanted to say about the band already in last months No-fi show review. However, something I wanted to make sure to give attention to is their charming and enchanting lyrics- which I think is a really important part of the Gliss experience. The dreamy sort-of Alternative Pop music that they create goes hand in hand with the romantic, swirly, daydreamy lyrics. "Summer Girl" is a popular favorite on local radio station KXLU I have noticed, and with good reason- it delivers quite a lovely and tight package of what a sweet and catchy love song should sound like. I personally, however, get swept away most of all by the song "Olive Square" and the simple, but thoughtful lyrics "someone told me that I'm gonna fly, all of my little silly life- when I open up my eyes." And the song "Beautiful Thing" has also burrowed a special little place in my heart as well with it's very addictive melodies and fun, upbeat mood.
You really must see them live though- as they have a whole new CD's worth of songs that definitely deserve attention that currently can only be experienced live, such as the song "Rainbow Star": "don't go very far, I'll wonder how you are. Don't stick around for me, you'll just lose your self-esteem. I don't know who you are - rainbow star - you are; well you stay up late at night, where your dreams don't ever die. And just don't lose yourself, I'll remember how ya felt- I don't know who you are - rainbow star".
I recently ran into lead singer, Marty, in Silverlake and he told me the band is working out a possible deal with one of Warners subsidiaries (I won't say which one just yet- as I know how things are never truly definite until the lawyers and contracts, etc. have all come together and blah blah blah. Besides, I am kinda superstitious and I don't want to jinx them). But even if this label doesn't work out- they are going places and fast-and I know there is plenty of other interest in them elsewhere- so ya better see them while you still can catch them at the more intimate venues like Spaceland, Silverlake Lounge, etc. So, okay L.A.- you've been warned! CD reviewed by chris beyond It took us forever to get the record reviews finally up and I didn't want to forget to review this album before their new one comes out (in August I think). This definitely feels like an in-between album as it draws a few songs from their last album "You've Seen Us...You Must Have Seen Us" as well as all-new songs on this 7 song e.p.. It opens with the crazy "Sweet Allie" where their pretty harmonious vocals are used like weapons being shot into the air. Just from that song, you know that this will be a good listening experience. The next new song is "Fresno Song" which was written due to their ties to the California town (even though they are in the UK). "Non-Descript" is pretty much that except that it has the usual neat-o guitars and is really good. The last new song is "Trailous" and I don't know what it's about, but I love it. Go and get this album while you're waiting for the next one and play it for your friends at a party. (Just take over their stereo... They won't mind!) Devil In The Woods, P.O. This album is incredibly bad...and it gets worse with every track it seems. The first song sounds like Destiny's Child meets bad French music from the 90s. The second track sounds like bad French music in the 90s meets Destiny's Child...and so on (until you get to the 10th and final track "Fucking Around" which is actually quite good and I hope it's an explanation for the rest of the album). The whole thing sounds like they were trying to write a bad pop-opera. The person who let me borrow this was going to throw it away. I hope they burn the remains so that it doesn't come back like in Dawn Of The Dead. The excuse on their website says that they collaborated with their driver from their American tour on this album. I think that speaks for itself so I'll end this review by saying that I liked their last album and I'll just pretend that they didn't make a second album. Mute, 429 Harrow Road, London W10 4RE, England, www.mute.com PARK AVENUE MUSIC "To Take With You" CD reviewed by quin I really like to consider myself a good person who really tries his best to be kind to others and not say anything seriously hurtful, but...I hate Park Avenue Music. It's "To Take With You" ...right to the garbage! It's horrendously bad from start to finish. There is one song on this ten song CD if you catch my drift. It sounds to me like they just wrote a song and put it on ten tracks and misleadingly gave the ten tracks ten different titles. Damn it!! ITS ALL THE SAME SONG!!!! It's not that the music makers aren't talented, it's just that it is sooooo booorrrrrriiiinnggg. Its like this: have you ever seen Mazzy Star play live? Now, I love Mazzy Star, I really do but they are so boring live that you just want to go to sleep standing up. or perhaps find a nice spot on the floor below all of the other people that are sleeping whilst standing. That is what this CD is like. It's like sleeping standing up. But by all means go out and buy this CD, tell all of your friends about it, experience it for yourself, fall in love with it, request these songs on KROQ, make this band bigger than Nirvana. That way I can say I hated them first, before it was cool to hate Park Avenue Music. oh yes, I almost forgot, the cover art for this CD is great. It was done by Adrienne Yan and you should probably check out her work at adrienneyan.com. you know how they say that something good can be found in everything and everyone, well she is it. I wish she would do a cover for a good CD. She is super talented. Devil In The Woods, P.O. Box 579168, Modesto, CA 95357, www.devilinthewoods.com
